June 2011 - A Year to Remember

Hello Parents,

In this newsletter we offer you the opportunity to remember the past year or maybe even the past four years. These photo galleries range from convocation to commencement. As you scroll through the many photographs, you may be be like most people who usually first look for glimpses of yourself, friends, acquaintances, events and places.

Take the time to re-experience this past academic year and how it has made a difference in the lives of the SLU community.

A message from

Campus Ministry
In the prayer known as the Suscipe, Ignatius offers back to God what is most precious to him, his liberty, memory, understanding, will. It was easy to see how liberty (freedom), will (what we want) and understanding (lessons learned, meaning perceived) would be considered most precious.

Let the graces of those times resurface and enliven you. Let the graces of the past offer you hope for today and tomorrow. Let the grace of those memories lead you forward in today’s choices and activities.

Welcome Week

Before classes began last August, all first-year and new transfer students participated in Welcome Week - several days of activities geared to help students get to know people and resources on campus. Along with the endless social events during the week, students also met with faculty, participated in convocation with SLU's president, and enjoyed other great events. Family Weekend and Homecoming

SLU's Family Weekend was held in conjunction with Homecoming. The 2010 Homecoming celebration was Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26, 2010. For alumni, Homecoming is a great way to reconnect with their alma mater.

For parents, Family Weekend is the ideal time to experience SLU with their children. Thousands of alumni and parents were on campus for one of the most exciting times of the school year.

Students and their families had numerous events to enjoy, including a parents' jazz reception in Busch Student Center's outdoor atrium Friday afternoon and an outdoor party and concert.

View photos from the Family Weekend events including the BBQ, Family Fun Area, fireworks and parade.

April 2011
Sam and Marilyn Fox ATLAS Week

The Eleventh Annual Sam and Marilyn Fox Atlas Week was April 4-8, 2011. The theme for the program was Global Justice: Meeting Basic Human Needs. ATLAS week highlighted the first U.N. Millennium Development Goal, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger and the seventh goal, to ensure environmental sustainability.

One of the main goals of the Atlas Program was to increase awareness of the global issues that confront us today in an effort not only to promote discussion, but to inspire and inform action.

Irene Khan, former secretary general of Amnesty International, delivered the Atlas Week keynote address. As the first woman, the first Asian, and the first Muslim to guide the world's largest human rights organization, Khan brought a new perspective to Amnesty International by broadening its work to include political and civil rights, and economic, social and cultural rights.

The SLU community has participated in the following service opportunities to increase awareness for social change while meeting the basic human needs of others in our community.

Parent Leadership Council
The Saint Louis University Parent Leadership Council met on April 8, 2011 and dedicated an entire morning to reviewing the University relationship with our greatest partners – parents! Twenty families were selected for the Parent Leadership Council and have been active in demonstrating to the University what the SLU parent experience is and how the University can be more intentional about offering support and guidance to parents throughout their student’s experience.

The Parent Leadership Council was established as a part of the Billiken Parent Association (BPA) to help provide direction and leadership for the Association as well as provide direct insight for advancing initiatives in this area. This year was the inaugural year for the BPA and at present, over 800 families are participants in the BPA!  If you are not already a member, please register online here and if you are interested in finding out how to get involved with the Parent Leadership Council or other opportunities, please email us at parents@slu.edu.

May 2011
Parent Jazz Reception

Local parent volunteers and donors came together on May 1, 2011 to celebrate the accomplishments and dedication of parent volunteers and donors during the 2010/2011 academic year. Approximately 220 parent volunteers made a lasting impact. Throughout the year, local parent volunteers placed 1,369 calls to welcome the incoming freshman parents to the SLU community and thank parent donors for their continued support. In addition, 1,759 calls were made to parents and prospective students to help them make a smooth transition into their freshman year.

During this celebration, SLU was able to report that during this academic year, parent gifts and pledges totaled $1,237,680. On behalf of the administration, students, faculty and staff, again we express our sincere appreciation for the outstanding support of Saint Louis University parents.

Helpful Things to Remember

The Grand Boulevard Bridge, which connects Saint Louis University's Frost and Medical Center Campuses, has begun construction and will be complete in 2012. SLU has set up a webpage designed to provide updates about the project.

Student Success Center
The Student Success Center provides wonderful resources for students to use in their academic journey through the process of becoming more competent and confident independent learners. We are committed to assisting students. Tutoring across colleges and majors is offered at convenient times and in various locations.

Career Services
Career counselors are available to help with developing cover letters and/or a resume. Employers even come to SLU to recruit our students for internships and jobs after graduation through our on-campus recruiting program and various Career Fairs throughout the year.

Social media sites are wonderful ways to stay connected to family and friends, and used when correctly, can be used to help students network with a future employer! Sites like Facebook and Twitter are common ways for students to keep connected, but did you know that employers also use these sites as a way to recruit new interns or employees?

Students should make sure all postings and photos are appropriate for their grandma to see and read.
