April 2012

A Message from Patrick T. Quinn, S.J.
It’s Spring—although the changeable weather of St. Louis never leaves us really sure.  A couple of years ago Campus Ministry redesigned their website and brochures to promote four categories in the life of the individual. They are: “Pray, Rest, Serve and Grow.” Most folks recognize the activities of these categories—liturgy and prayer (Pray), retreats (Rest), and service (Serve) to be foundational to the spiritual life.  But it’s the last category—Grow—that we don’t always pay attention to. What helps us to grow spiritually?  What helps us to grow closer to God and to one another? Full story

We Welcome a New Dean of Students
In January Saint Louis University welcomed Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Dr. Mona Hicks to the SLU family.  Dr. Hicks most recently worked at the University of North Texas as an Assistant Vice President for Campus Life and prior to that position served as the Dean of Students there. Dr. Hicks recently took some time out from her busy schedule to chat with the Billiken Bulletin about her hopes for parents, families and students at SLU. Full story

Prospective Parent Phonathon
Each spring, members of the Parents Program reach out to parents and students of the incoming freshman class to confirm admission information, as well as provide information about SLU 101, freshmen move-in, and Welcome Week activities. Throughout April, approximately 70 current and alumni parents were on SLU’s campus making calls to provide valuable first-year experience resources. By April 12, over 950 prospective parents had been contacted. Full story

Parent Trivia Night
Members of the Parents Program sponsored the 3rd Annual Parents Program Trivia Night to raise money for one of the most pressing needs of students – scholarships!  It was held on March 10 and approximately $3,000 was raised to support the Emergency Scholarship Fund. This fund provides aid to returning students who experience financial difficulty in continuing their studies at SLU.

Over 140 parents, family, friends, and alumni gathered in the Wool Ballrooms to test their knowledge against the best and the brightest. Fr. Nicholas Smith, S.J. was on hand as the reader, as well as several Steering Committee members to assist with raffles and silent auctions. The Parents Programs sends a big THANK YOU to everyone who participated.
